Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- devise and manage an acquisitions policy
* be familiar with the principles of appraisal, weeding, sampling and de-accessioning
* be familiar with the development of the principles of archival description at an international and UK level
* have an in-depth knowledge of current international and national descriptive standards specifically ISAD(G), ISAAR and the NCA Rules and to be able to apply these standards in practice
* become proficient in the use of the archive management software package CALM 2000
* be aware of current developments in the area of networking and of the implications of electronic data exchange
Brief description
A substantial part of the course is concerned with the impact of information technology on archival description and the dissemination of archival information by electronic means. Students will have the opportunity to use CALM2000, the current leading archive management software package. Students will also be made aware of current initiatives to create archive networks and of the development of protocols for electronic data exchange particularly Encoded Archival Description.
Aims
This module is intended to provide students with the skills they require to process archives from the point at which they are received into the repository to the point at which they are made available to researchers.
