Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. formulate aims, objectives and methodologies in the creation of websites
2. measure the success of a web site through on-line questionnaires
3. evaluate museum web sites and how these sites reflect, or not, the institution's Mission Statement
4. provides the opportunity to gain vocational experience in authoring a web site
5. undertake a piece of applied art historical research
6. develop and extend expertise in ICT in, for example Adobe Photoshop, Netscape Composer, Microsoft FrontPage, associated image manipulation software applications, and the use of a Digital Camera and Flatbed Scanner

Brief description

Today, a museum's web site might be the only contact many people will have with that institution. This module examines the public interface of museums on the world wide web, contemporary approaches to access through museums' use of IT, and the interpretation of collections via the internet. Current international practice is examined to evaluate how collections are projected on the internet. This module will examine how art galleries and museums meet the challenge and make innovative use of electronic media to stage virtual exhibitions. The aim is for each student to conceive, research, make the selection, write and design a virtual exhibition that has some aspect of the School's Art Collection at its core, but also makes use of 'virtual loans' and will include an aspect of contemporary art practice.

3. develop a critical and theoretical understanding of the way objects are displayed in electronic form
4. give insight into current innovative practice in museums and contemporary art galleries
5. further proficiency in web page design, word processing, scanning and image manipulation
