On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Discuss the mechanisms underpinning adaptation and describe how to measure adaptation.
2. Compare and contrast the problems that face invertebrate and vertebrates living within aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.
3. Critically assess how physiological processes and behaviours in invertebrate and vertebrate animals are controlled or modulated by variables in their own respective aquatic and terrestrial environments.
4. Design, execute experiments, and interpret data in animal environmental physiology.
The module deciphers how both physiological and behavioural based mechanisms in invertebrate and vertebrate animals are required to deal with abiotic problems and make the most of opportunities in aquatic and terrestrial environments.
The key long-term and short-term physiological and behavioural strategies for terrestrial habitats (living in air) will form the next section, with continued reference to the differences with the aquatic environment. The domination of arachnids, insects and vertebrates on land via their supporting physiological mechanisms to avoid dehydration, maintain body temperature and gas exchange mechanisms will be a focus of this lecture block. The terrestrial section will also consider environmental adaptations in animals that endure extreme conditions such as hot and dry arid deserts, polar regions and altitudes. The strategies for animal navigation in the terrestrial environment will be examined: trail following, route learning, piloting, path integration, compass navigation and map and compass navigation. The adaptive significance of animal navigation will be outlined such as abilities to promote reproductive success and facilitate food acquisition. Throughput the terrestrial section references will be made to the influence of modern human populations and environmental change on the physiology of other animals.
