Learning Outcomes

On completion of the module, students should :-

  • be technically proficient in the operation of field instruments
  • be able to demonstrate proficiency in field, graphical, sampling and geophysical methods
  • have gained practical experience in the application of field sampling and testing techniques related to specific environmental problems
  • be able to classify major rock types
  • be able to construct a geological map
  • appreciate the logistics involved in undertaking different types of fieldwork operations
  • demonstrate an ability to analyse data and present results of original field measurements in a technically-sound report
  • be proficient in oral communication skills
  • be able to synthesise the environmental problems within a specific area of study and to discuss the links between these problems and the geology, geomorphology, land use and economic exploitation of the area.

Aims

This module aims to build on the experience gained in previous field modules. The module will develop field skills and apply these to a specific area of study. The module will require the students to synthesise data from a variety of field sources into both verbal and written reports.

Content

This module is designed to build on the skills ganed during the first and second year fieldwork. The module will be based in a specific location and is designed to assess a wide range of environmental issues within that area. The module will consist of field exercises which will involve planning and execution of field sampling/data collection, collation and synthesis of these field data and presentation in both verbal and written form. The module is designed to present 'real world' problems which might be faced by graduates working in the field of Environmental Earth Sciences.
