On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
Demonstrate knowledge of major psychological, physical and social consequences of physical (in)activity.
Demonstrate core knowledge of key theories and concepts in exercise psychology.
Identify basic strategies that may be used to enhance adherence to physical activity and exercise.
There is now substantial evidence to support the view that physical activity is associated with psychological, physical and social health. However, only persistent participation in physical activity can bring about these changes. Exercise psychology involves the study of attitudes, cognitions and behaviours that relate to physical activity and the outcomes of exercise participation. Students need some fundamental understanding of these concepts and theories in order to effectively facilitate health through physical activity.
The module will introduce students to a range of theories and research in exercise psychology. The main aims of the module are to present an overview of key theories in exercise psychology and facilitate a fundamental understanding of how these relate to physical activity practice.
The content of the module is based on the psychological, physical and social benefits that can evolve from exercise participation. Adopting a lifespan perspective the content develops an understanding of physical activity importance to well-being through childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age. Theories and strategies are studied to understand the psychology of exercise including themes such as self-perceptions, body image, motivation and adherence, anxiety and quality of life.
