Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Discuss the position, role and function of the major organs within the body

2. Discuss the differences in the anatomy and physiology of the horse and other related species and also differences between horses (e.g. gender, life stage, breeds)

Brief description

The module will consider the different organs and structures of the body, the relative position of them and their inter-related physiology

Aims

To give students of Equine Science, Vet Biosciences or Animal Science a comprehensive understanding of the principles of the anatomy and physiology of the horse

2. Evolution of companion animals
3. Bones, Skeletons and Teeth
4. Joints and Ligaments
5. Muscles
6. Digestive tract
7. Respiratory Tract
8. Urogenital System and Reproduction
9. Nervous system
10. Sense Organs and Common Integument
11. Heart and Circulation
12. Endocrinology and Lymphatic System

Module Skills

Skills Type Skills details
Communication Students will be required to produce a lab report for one of the practicals
Improving own Learning and Performance Students will be required to undertake background reading
Information Technology Students will be required to produce a typed lab report for one of the practicals and submit this via Turnitin on Blackboard. In the other two practicals assessment will be via an on-line quiz on Blackboard.
Research skills Students will be required to undertake background reading on the topic and produce a lab report for one of the practicals
Team work During practicals students will have to work together to perform dissections
