On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
Critically evaluate different approaches to the study of bilingual education
Critically discuss and justify their own stance on public debates about the education of bilingual learners
Critically examine the role of bilingual programmes
Demonstrate critical engagement with relevant sources
This module considers the `what', `why' and `how' of bilingual education. In the first part of the module, the `what' question opens up the range of educational policy responses to linguistic and cultural diversity in different national and regional contexts. The `why' question then shifts the focus to the reasons for the differences in the nature and outcomes of different types of policies and educational programmes. In the final part of the module, the `how' question focuses attention on the ways in which policies are translated into everyday practice in bilingual and multilingual schools and classrooms.

4. To understand & consider issues raised by ESTYN in a report on Welsh immersion and intensive language teaching, pilot projects in schools . To gain a better understanding of various 'Immersion' models.
5. Bilingual Education operating in Canada and the nature of programmes employed.
6. Bilingual Education in Finland.
7. Bilingual Education in Spain.
8. To acquire an awareness of EAL - English as an Additional Language, and to understand the learners' needs.
9. To understand and familiarize yourself with: 'Dual / Two-Way Language Education'.
10. To understand and familiarize yourself with the model of:- 'Elite' and 'Additive Bilingual Education'. To become acquainted with The European and International Schools.
