On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
To demonstrate an understanding of the necessary critical, theoretical and conceptual underpinnings that will enable them to understand and evaluate their position prior to entering a placement in a complex national or international environment.
To plan and prepare effectively for their work placement in an appropriate professional environment. The students will show an awareness of contemporary professional practice and develop their employability skills.
Assess their own skills and learning development in the context of planning their future career.
Evaluate and critique practical scenarios whilst applying the lessons to their own potential activities.
Demonstrate an understanding of the expectation of appropriate professional practices in employment contexts.
Brief description
This module will provide the theoretical and practical basis for progression on to the core module ED23740 Placement Module. It is shared into two distinct areas of study - the theoretical and academic basis for learning in a work environment and reflecting upon experiences for development purposes and the engagement with practical methodologies for recording and analysing experiences. Completing this module will equip students with the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills required to effectively and successfully undertake a work placement in the field of education and international development.
Aims
Introduce some of the personal transferable skills that will be required in the real work environment.
Content
Session 1: Introduction to the module and an overview of all students' arranged placements (which will have been arranged at the end of Year 1). This will also include a generic overview of the placement module and its aims, intentions outcomes.
Session 2: Theories of work- based learning - an overview of the theoretical background to reflective practice.
Session 3: Reflection for learning - practical frameworks for reflection.
Session 4: Understanding Myself - how to assess personal values, learning intentions, outcomes and expectations. Setting learning goals and articulating and negotiating a learning contract.
Session 5: Professional etiquette in the workplace. Roles and responsibilities, working in teams, independence and innovation.
Session 6: Cultural and Ethical issues in the workplace - a consideration of a variety of contexts for placement learning and the impact upon potential development.
Session 7: Theories and methods of observation and recording experiences on placement. Effective use of diaries, logs and journals.
Session 8: Methods of analysing personal learning and impact of learning. Relate back to theoretical basis for reflection and development.
Session 9: Planning your Learning Journey - individual, contextualised planning of appropriate documentation for placement portfolio development. Developing an understanding of the theoretical basis for their portfolio so as to justify their structure and use.
Session 10: Evaluation and analysis of placement case studies. Application of lessons and learning outcomes. Clarification of practical issues in the lead in to the student's placement.
