Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the key processes in sound and cinematography.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of how choices in shots and sound affect the visual expressivity and clarity of storytelling through images in film production.
3. Demonstrate dexterity and technical understanding in the use of cameras and production sound recording equipment.

Brief description
Cinematography and sound are the core technical processes of the film production period. Students will learn the role of the Director of Photography, Camera operator and production sound recordist. Introduction to cinematography will concentrate on practical hands on learning of camera skills, lighting and composition; both practice and technique. These skills are combined with the working ethos for the crew, and from this platform we encourage cinematography as a visual means of storytelling. During the course we will discuss and provide background principles of use to anyone dealing with cinematography and sound, especially sound accompanying a picture, and, by example, demonstrate the utility of principles put into practice. We will follow through a course of a production, from the initial discussions on program content, the practicalities and pitfalls of pickup of sound by microphones on set, to the reproduction of sound in cinemas and homes at the end of the chain.
