Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

* Discuss the theories, evaluate and implement the knowledge and tools of operations/innovation management;

* Critically review the design of operations systems; analyse the planning and control mechanisms;

* Understand the importance and impact of technological change in business operations;

* Critically identify and discuss the contemporary operational issues that organizations face.

Aims

The module provides an introduction to a range of topics: it is designed to give students a general introduction to some of the many topics that come under the general heading of Innovation and Operations Management. Hence it will help students to gain an understanding of key areas of innovation and operations including definitions and examples from existing literature and from a set of example cases that illustrate innovation and operations in many different settings and markets.

The aims of this module are:
- Provide students an understanding of how they can apply relevant operations and innovation management concepts/techniques to manage operations/innovations effectively
- Use a range of operations and innovation management tools and techniques required to solve business problems pertaining to the operations/innovation of a firm
- Build students’ ability/skills to approach and analyse a variety of operations and innovation management issues and problems


Brief description

The purpose of this module is to gradually develop students skills of problem solving and implementation planning, using the structured application of techniques to critically analyse operation and innovation cases. Case analysis/feedback is used to provide formative assessment of students progress in both understanding theory and developing cognitive skills.
