Brief description

The School of Art (SoA) runs two accredited museums that house growing collections and related archives comprising over 20,000 paintings, prints, drawings, photographs, ceramics and decorative art. Unique in Wales, and of international importance, these collections offer primary research material for staff, students and external scholars. This module provides an opportunity for students to experience the hands-on study of original artworks from the SoA collections. Working alongside experienced art historians and museum curators, students will be encouraged to make more effective use of these resources in research throughout their degree. The module also provides an opportunity to actively participate in applied research on the collections (including an edited, web-based output). It is especially relevant therefore to Art History students.

Aims

The module aims to introduce first year Art History and/or Fine Art students to the importance of using primary source material (actual museum objects and archives) for developing academic writing skills. Through lectures, seminars, writing workshops and assessed presentations, students will gain an in-depth knowledge of the SoA collections and their histories. The module aims to provide skills which students can apply to other Art History modules in Part 1 and Part 2 of their degree scheme. Above all, the module aims to develop greater confidence in students, encouraging them to access and research museum collections. Varied methods of delivery will provide an inclusive approach to students of different abilities and learning styles.
