|Students must take elements of assessment equivalent to those that led to the failure of the module.
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Explain the current and future challenges facing food packaging.
2. Evaluate the merits and limitations of current packaging options for food products, and their uses.
3. Evaluate the options for improving the sustainability of packaging.
4. Assess the role of packaging in future food supply systems.
Over recent years awareness of the environmental impacts of food packaging production and waste has grown. This module will take an in-depth look at the uses of, and requirements for, packaging materials in modern food supply systems. It will then explore packaging related environmental impacts (including greenhouse gas emissions and plastic waste) before considering governance models for packaging waste management and the latest circular economy solutions to reduce environmental impacts. Finally, drawing on cutting edge research in the sector, the module will focus on new uses for, and types of, packaging in the context of changes in food supply systems and customer shopping habits.

|Numeracy will be demonstrated in various assessments through the understanding of trends and information either given for analysis in the assignment or through the critical evaluation and comparison of the results in published research.
|Students will be expected to communicate complex research outputs to their peers in the interactive tasks and also through other assignments.
|Improving own Learning and Performance
|Detailed feedback will be given for assignment work. This will be assessed through the feedback providing general guidance towards the student’s next assignment.
|Students will be required to source information from a variety of scientific publication data bases and to use Blackboard for all aspects of the module.
|Personal Development and Career planning
|This module will provide the students with the latest research into packaging to help them to develop their business or provide the most up-to-date information/advice to their colleagues/clients in Industry.
|Interactive tasks will be used to help develop and improve students’ problem solving skills, through use of questions that present theoretical problems for the students to solve. In addition the case study will require students to address a specific problem.
|Students will be required to undergo directed self-study, so will develop their literature research skills.

|Subject specific concepts relating to packaging will be developed and assessed throughout the module.
|Online assessments will require students to debate among themselves to develop a consensus of opinion.
