Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Define and understand a range of complex needs.

Evaluate the impact of social, emotional and behavioral issues for children with SEN.

Evaluate educational strategies to support learners with complex needs.

Evaluate the role of external agencies in supporting learners with complex needs.

Aims

This module is a core module on the FDA Education (SEN) scheme and an optional module on BA Education. The module requires students to critically evaluate the impact of complex needs on the leaner, educators, families/carers, and other specialist support groups. Students will be required to evaluate best practice and communicate these to their peers.

Brief description

This module will provide students with the knowledge and skills to understand and support learners with complex needs. The module will allow students to understand how complex needs can have an impact on the learner and evaluate various teaching strategies and learning aids to support learners. The module will focus heavily on multi- agency and partnership working including working with families and carers to provide a holistic support package. Students will be required to identify best practices and to present these in the form of a poster and to deliver an oral presentation.

Week 1- Defining and understanding complex needs
Week 2- Characteristics of learning specific complex learning difficulties
Week 3- Understanding the requirements of learners with complex needs
Week 4- Learning aids and their uses
Week5- Designing appropriate learning objectives for learners with complex needs
Week 6- Professional intervention and multi-agency working
Week 7- Working with families to support and meet the needs of learners
Week 8-Poster assignment preparation: Effective strategies for supporting leaners
Week 9- Case studies and examples
Week 10- Developing and maintaining effective partnerships.


Module Skills

Application of Number Statistical reports will be considered and data to support arguments will be analysed.
Communication This will be developed both in seminar discussions and in preparation for the assessments. Furthermore the poster assignment will requires students to prepare materials for a range of audiences while the oral presentation will assess their communication skills
Improving own Learning and Performance Assessment for learning will be incorporated into many sessions to allow learners to reflect on their own performance and to develop strategies to improve.
Information Technology All assignments will be word processes and students will be required to utilize IT resources in the research of their assignments.
Personal Development and Career planning Reflection activities during seminars will be used to encourage personal development.
Problem solving Students will be required to identify the most suitable interventions to support learners.
Research skills This will be developed throughout the module but particularly in regards to the research necessary in the assessments.
Subject Specific Skills Students will develop skills in providing appropriate interventions for learners with complex needs.
Team work Seminar activities will involve group work.
