On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Discuss the range and scope of audio-visual media and collections;
2. Develop risk-based strategies for ensuring the preservation of audio-visual formats;
3. Describe the legal environment, including information property rights, surrounding the collection and provision of access to audio-visual media;
4. Develop policies and procedures for documenting and enabling access to a range of audio-visual formats;
5. Identify how standards can underpin preservation and access activities in audio-visual collections;
6. Demonstrate practical application of technical and semantic methods for assuring preservation and access to audio-visual assets.
Students will be provided with the theoretical knowledge and skills required to ensure the long-term accessibility to specialist media collections through the development and administration of appropriate preservation and access programmes.
The history and scope of audio-visual archives, collection development and partnership working.
2. Audio-visual media and technologies
The range of obsolete and current audio-visual media and technologies required for their playback and access.
3. Appraising and accessioning audio-visual media
Assessing and preparing audio-visual material for custodial care.
4. Preservation and storage
Preservation and storage requirements for of audio-visual media.
5. Audio-visual media and the legal environment
Intellectual property rights, 3rd party rights, freedom of information, data protection issues etc. as they pertain to audio-visual curation.
6. Digitisation of obsolete media
Practical skills in digitisation and format migration of obsolete audio-visual media for preservation and access.
7. Web archives
Capturing audio-visual and social media to create web-archives and augment collections.
8. Cataloguing and metadata
Metadata and vocabularies for control of hybrid collections and effective access
9. Access strategies
Innovative methods of providing and restricting access to audio-visual materials

|There will be a requirement to discuss and collaborate with members of the class and professionals at the National Library of Wales. Written communication will be assessed.
|Improving own Learning and Performance
|Students will be required to work in a variety of situations and with a variety of both professionals and students.
|Students will be required to use a range of appropriate digital technology both for learning, reporting and specific to audio-visual media management.
|Personal Development and Career planning
|Use of professional sources and documentation will foster student awareness of available learning resources and improve critical and evaluatory skills. This module is embedded in a professional organisation learning a skill required in the real world.
|Assignment work and practical activities will utilise professional scenarios in which strategies for dealing with particular issues and problems need to be formulated.
|Assignment preparation will require the identification and location of relevant academic and professional literature, and professional best practice.
