Brief description

Students will be required to select and take a training course in one major or two minor practical areas. These training courses will be run externally to the University and will be taught by accredited training organisations/bodies that have been verified as suitable by the University. The level of the course will be determined by the students' experience levels and could range from introductory training to higher levels. The timing of this training may necessitate the use of blocks of time in term time, Christmas vacation or January Exam period. It is anticipated that students will gain awarding body qualifications as part of this training process but that this will not be a criterion for passing the module. Completion of qualifications may occur after the completion of the module and may require further training / assessment. Formal teaching of relevant health and safety regulations, undertaking risk assessments, and how to manage emergencies and incidents in the land-based sector will be carried out. The effective use of communication, supervision of people and group management in different contexts will be developed in lectures, workshops and presentations in Semester 1.

Part of this module will be taught by outside organisations/bodies and each student will be able to tailor theirtraining to their need for practical certification following the industrial work experience where certification is often provided by the employer, and at a level appropriate to their experience. As such the content of the module will be different for every student.

1. Individual skill development in practical area(s) chosen:

Major certification such as chainsaw, safe use of pesticides – tractor or hand held, first aid at work (4 day course)

It is anticipated that training courses will be of at least 5 days duration in total and that students will need to practice the skills developed within the training.
