Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Independently demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the human capital impacts of project/programme management process to engineering management functions for a range of different scenarios.
2. Critically compare various mechanisms, frameworks and concepts and the application of these to facilitate detailed delivery of objectives and the consideration and constraints inherent.
3. Provide a critical understanding of the soft skills/competences associated with effective delivery of large-scale projects and programmes and the mechanism by which these inter-relate with strategy and leadership theory and practice.
4. Effectively implement the above across various cases exploring different environmental impacts.
Brief description
Whilst Project Management typically focusses on the process of managing short-term projects to successful completion aligned to the triad of Time, Cost, and Quality Leading Project Management explores in depth the more sophisticated, and softer elements of successful Programme Management and the impact of strategy and leadership on the delivery of successful projects and programmes.
Content
. A full exploration of the nature of cooperation is explored through the concepts of Motivation, Trust (as examples) investigating the softer but fundamental foundations of leading high performing teams to deliver short term projects, and longer term programmes.
. Identifying the importance of organizational learning and memory and exploring barriers to the effective delivery such as forms of learning and memory, necessary conditions, country and company culture, and improving cultural fit.
. Resource analysis is investigated and considers the impacts of resource availability, capacity, and competence to fully examine load capabilities and allocate sufficient resource based upon competitive environment.

Know ledge and understanding of contemporary issues in the operational environment as well as research skills dev eloped in connection with the preparation of assessed individual coursework contribute to transferable skills. This module equips managers with knowledge and tools to operate various functions across an organisation. |
| Problem solving | The module demands the participants to apply analytical skills to reason and understand the challenging nature of the subject. By introducing a variety of theoretical as well as empirical topics, the module enables students to develop creative thinking approaches to problem solving and to critically evaluate potential solutions to complex and challenging problems. These skills will have to be applied in seminar discussions, preparation of the written assessment. Project management tools and techniques will be applied to business situations. |
| Research skills | Students will be mostly working with influential theoretical as well as empirical research papers published in project management journals. This will introduce them to a range of research methods, which will facilitate development of appropriate research skills necessary to produce high quality project reports. The students will have to prepare an individual report based on information that they will have to collect, having to arrange coherently in a written document all the relevant material gathered. |
| Subject Specific Skills | Use of strategic models to understand developing international issues. Capacity for overseeing operations and PM tools, data collection and analyses techniques and their application. |
| Team work | Team work ethics are encouraged in seminars. During seminars students will be encouraged to participate in interactive group discussions/presentations. |
