|Individual Seminar Presentation
|Students must take elements of assessment equivalent to those that led to failure of the module.
|3 Hours Students must take elements of assessment equivalent to those that led to failure of the module.
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Describe key aspects of animal immunology, bacteriology, virology and parasitology, both at the molecular and applied level
2. Evaluate data on the etiology, pathogenesis, treatment and prevention of infectious and immunological diseases in animals.
3. Explain and discuss means of disease diagnosis and control, with particular reference to current research.
The aims of the module are:
To investigate in detail animal immunology, bacteriology, virology and parasitology both at the molecular and applied level.
To apply this knowledge to animal disease, and so understand disease etiology, pathogenesis, treatment
To understand the principles of disease diagnosis and control.
It will achieve this by considering the following areas:
Key components of the immune system.
Immunological aspects of reproduction, stress and exercise.
Principles, merits and limitations of vaccinations.
Principles of integrated programmes for the control of parasites.
Principles governing the selection of appropriate anthelmintics.
Approaches used for the isolation and identification of bacterial and viral pathogens.
Means by which bacteria and viruses are able to cause disease.
Procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of bacterial and viral infections.
|Application of Number
|Developing and assessing oral and written communication will be an integral part of the assessment for this module through the delivery of a seminar, accompanying summary sheet and exam.
|Improving own Learning and Performance
|Students will be expected to deliver their seminar with the aid of power point and to produce their accompanying summary on a word processor, containing written text and illustration.
|Personal Development and Career planning
|Students will have some choice in the area which is covered by their seminar, as such this will allow them to begin to specialize in areas of specific interest linked to their future career plans.
|Students will be expected to demonstrate significant literature research skills in preparation for their seminar presentation.
|Subject Specific Skills
|Principles of diagnosing, treating and preventing disease.
|Group seminar work will develop team work skills.
