On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Identify and discuss the key historiographical debates concerning the interactions between Europe and the wider world in the period 1000-2000.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the role of politics, trade, ideas, migration and violence in the interactions of Europe and the world over time.
3. Evaluate a range of primary source types, related to the five key themes of the module and in the various time periods under study.
4. Apply a comparative perspective to the impact of Europe’s relationship with the rest of the world.
Whether we consider the Crusades of the Middle Ages, the discovery of America in the fifteenth century or the World Wars of the twentieth century, European history has been defined by interactions with the wider world. This module will explore key themes, events and developments in the history of Europe’s relationship with the rest of the world over the last 1,000 years. By examining the themes of power, violence, ideas, migration and the trade this module will consider the role that Europe has played in the wider world. Students will also gain an understanding of and how these exchanges have changed Europe. This course introduces students to new areas of history and a more global approach to the subject which will provide a taste of topics and themes in which they can specialise in their part two studies.
The first lecture will provide an introduction to the module and the key themes to be discussed. The course will be divided into five themes: power, violence, ideas, migration and the trade. Each theme will be covered in a set of three or four lectures. Each set of lectures will begin with a led lecture that introduces the theme and gives a conceptual and chronological overview. The next two or three lectures in the set will be case studies that explore the theme in a specific context. For example the set on migration would include one introductionry lecture that outlines migration as a concept and provides a overview of migrations between Europe and the wider world in the period 1000-2000. The lecture will also introduce the two or three case studies that are to follow and locate them within the broader context of the theme. The case studies provide an opportunity to explore the migration in a specific geographical or temporal context such as European migration to the New World or more recent economic migration.

|Written communication skills will be developed through the coursework and written examination; skills in oral presentation will be developed in seminars but are not formally assessed.

|Students will be advised on how to improve research and communication skills through the individual tutorial providing feedback on submitted coursework.
|Students will be encouraged to locate suitable material on the web and to apply it appropriately to their own work. Students will also be expected to word-process their work and make use of Blackboard. These skills will not be formally assessed.
|Personal Development and Career planning
|Students will develop a range of transferable skills, including time management and communication skills, which may help them identify their personal strengths as they consider potential career paths.
|Students are expected to note and respond to historical problems which arise as part of the study of this subject area and to undertake suitable research for seminars and essays.
|Students will develop their research skills by reading a range of texts and evaluating their usefulness in preparation for the coursework and the written examination.
|Subject Specific Skills
|Historical analysis of written and material evidence. Comparative analysis of different countries’ experiences of processes and events.
|Students will be expected to play an active part in group activities (e.g. short group presentations in seminars) and to learn to evaluate their own contribution to such activities.
