On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Describe and explain a range of human communicative practices, including computer mediated communicative practices.
2. Describe and reflect on the use of methodological tools such as content analysis and semiotic analysis in communication research.
3. Examine and develop a range of key skills that empower individuals and make them more effective communicators.
4. Explain group communication and team building processes and describe key principles of effective communication.
5. Outline and demonstrate the qualities of effective report writing and the key features in giving effective presentations.
This module provides an introduction to human communicative practice studied from linguistic and psychological perspectives. It introduces the theory behind communicative practices and provides students with the skills to describe and analyse a variety of communicative practices, including computer mediated communication. In addition, it allows students to develop their own communicative skills including skills in writing and oral presentation.
Topics covered include: basic interpersonal communication and communication models, non-verbal communication, content analysis, semiotic analysis, computer mediated communicative practice, report writing, information gathering and structuring, use of media and oral presentation. The module will be delivered through a series of presentations and practical activity-based sessions which will offer opportunities for students to engage in individual and group work activities.
|Report and essay writing skills are assessed through the assignments, as are oral presentation skills. Students will also undertake presentations and activities in workshops.

|Reflect on the preparation work done for seminars; reflect on feedback from assignments following completion.
|Information technology will be used as a tool on the module and students will learn about computer mediated communicative practice. All coursework is to be word-processed.
