Brief description

This module is designed to give Foundation Year students a broad introduction to key themes across the Humanities and Social
Sciences, to enable them to experience and reflect on crossdiscipline learning experiences.

Students will also be provided with instruction on how to use learning resources and information on services provided to
enhance their personal development.

The module will develop and enhance key skillsets as indicated in the Learning Outcomes and Assessment.

Content

In Week 0 students will attend workshops introducing them to learning resources.

Students will attend bespoke Foundation Year workshops to help them identify appropriate Level 1 content in Subject A and Subject B, and help students reflect on their learning experiences throughout the course. These will take place in registration week (0), and teaching weeks 5 and 8, culminating in individual poster presentations in January during the exam period.

Staff from each department will contribute two hours of ‘taster sessions’ a week to the students. This will provide students with an understanding of what to expect from their named subject when they progress to first year. The taster sessions will provide students with an understanding of the concepts, key theories and methodological approaches underpinning subjects across the
Humanities and Social Sciences.

Students will be provided with a list of academic activities to carry out each week as part of the process for developing a learning journal.
In Weeks 1-4 and 7-10 students will also attend a 1 hour personal development seminar
In Weeks 5 and 6, students will have a 2 hour writing workshop.
