Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Demonstrate familiarity with a wide range of knowledge of historical building, both secular and spiritual, and its interpretation.

Demonstrate familiarity with comparative perspectives on the history of buildings and their interpretation

Analyse and reflect critically on building types and form

Gather, sift and critically assess relvant source materials

Brief description

This module is designed to encourage an awareness of the built heritage and the importance of material culture to historical interpretation. It will help students to recognise the potential of buildings as historical evidence and to assess to what extent architectural developments are related to religious ideals and to changes in social conditions and aspirations. This will include the study and interpretation of plans, illustrations as well as written sources, and where possible and appropriate, by direct experience of buildings through site visits.

Content

The module will explore the built heritage as historical evidence, demonstrating how social and religious developments can be traced through buildings.
Themes will include: castles, churches and monasteries, manor houses, the buildings of the lower orders.

Co-ordinating with others Students will be expected to play an active part in group activities (e.g. short group presentations in seminars) and to learn to evaluate their own contribution to such activities.
Creative Problem Solving Students are expected to note and respond to historical problems which arise as part of the study of this subject area and to undertake suitable research for seminars and essays.
Critical and analytical thinking Students will develop their skills in critical and analytical thinking through processing information as part of the assessment for the module.
Digital capability Students will be expected to make use of a range of electronic resources and will develop their digital capabilities as part of the process.
Professional communication Written communication skills will be developed through the coursework and written examination; skills in oral presentation will be developed in seminars but are not formally assessed.
