On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of evidence-based practice within the context of counselling.
2. Select a clinical issue, practice, client group or context of own choosing and develop an appropriate evidence base.
3. Show critical reflection in regards to how an evidence base may inform your development as a practitioner.
In this module, you will build the knowledge, skills and understanding required to begin to develop yourself as an evidence-based practitioner with the context of counselling. You will learn about the foundations of counselling as an evidence-based practice, the types and range of evidence that counselling practice draws upon, how to develop and evaluate an evidence base in the context of a particular clinical problem, context or client group, and how to use the outcomes of evidence-based work to reflect on your own practice and development.
Introduction to evidence-based practice in counselling; identifying and locating appropriate sources of evidence; developing and evaluating an evidence base; reflecting on implications for own practice and development.

|Application of Number||Students will continue to develop and extend their awareness of the role of statistical evidence in the literature supporting elements of counselling practice.|
|Communication||Students will need to develop clear written skills in summing up the evidence base they have developed and presenting clear, succinct and critical summaries of the size, nature and scale of the evidence base itself.|
|Improving own Learning and Performance||Student will build on their developing awareness of the role of reflective practice by critically reflecting on the use of evidence-based approaches by counselling practitioners, including themselves. This is assessed in the portfolio.|
|Information Technology||Students will continue to develop skills in accessing bibliographic resources in order to locate appropriate literature to support their studies. They will develop skills in conducting searches that yield materials suitable for the development of evidence bases. Students will also use ICT skills in developing their portfolio assessment.|
|Personal Development and Career planning||As part of this module, student will engage with a range of theoretical approaches, tools and techniques and their corresponding evidence bases. In doing this, students will develop a feel for those approaches which particularly align with their personal approach to counselling. This in turn may help to shape students potential career pathways moving forwards.|
|Problem solving||Students will develop skills in formulating their own problem or research question, and in planning an appropriate strategy for developing an evidence base in response. This will be assessed via the portfolio.|
|Research skills||Students will continue to develop skills in identifying and accessing supporting literature to support material introduced in lectures and facilitate the completion of coursework elements. These skills will be assessed in the portfolio assessment.|
|Subject Specific Skills||Students will develop strong literature search and analytical skills, in identifying relevant material and determining the relevant quality and contribution of such materials to the assessment of the evidence base.|
