Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Demonstrate a growing proficiency in painting or drawing the life model.

Analyse the human form

Evidence a growing understanding of the creative potential of life studies within the framework of their other art practice.

Evaluate their own work in relation to other students taking this module.

Evidence some knowledge of methods and materials, their relative potentials and limitations.

Articulate ideas about their own work through interaction in individual and group tutorials.

Be able to work independently - outside the studio - on a body of work related to the figure.

Conduct art historical research bearing some relevance, and informing their practice, on figure-based drawing or painting.

Brief description

Students further their practice in the context of the life class, conducting drawings and paintings of the life model. The type and length of the pose is set by the tutor in the context of the class. Students also complete drawings and paintings outside of the class and are expected to conduct research in representations of the figure in art history.

Aims

This module is designed for students wishing to work in the life class at level 2. It is an option for students with a particular interest in painting and drawing the nude figure and forms part of the pathways to life studies initiated in part 1.

Content

Life study sessions take place in the life room as timetabled. The tutor determines the poses of each session. Students attend and draw the figure and alsdo produce a series of drawings and paintings independently of the class plus art historical research informing their practice.
