Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Create a personal business plan, including a body of work for promotion and commercial outcome

Understand and apply the principles for budgeting; income and expenditure

Communicate to a professional standard, in writing proposals and presenting plans

Use appropriate research methods to find opportunities and develop proposals

Effective project management, such as independent research, planning and time management

Brief description

This module will focus on the vocational aspects of professional creative contexts. For example, developing proposals for grant applications, promoting and selling work, preparing for exhibitions, setting up studios and working with clients on a freelance basis. In completing the module, students are encouraged to think and plan ahead for their first year following graduation.

Aims

1. Develop understanding of professional practice in the creation, presentation and promotion of art

2. Develop confidence in the planning of proposals and actions leading to the establishment of a potential future career path

3. Provide key information to enable informed choices and decisions as a professional artist

4. Encourage awareness of professional standards in conduct and practice

5. Develop an understanding of the application of skills to a wider context

Content

Through a series of lectures and seminars the module will cover some of the issues and practicalities faced by professional artists - including for example, developing proposals, planning for a solo exhibition, setting up a studio and working with clients on a freelance basis.

In completing the module, students are encouraged to develop a Personal Development Plan (PDP) as a potential blueprint for their first year following graduation.
