Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Demonstrate a knowledge of basic cell structure, cell organelles and their function

Describe the structure and function of biomolecules

Perform calculations and analyse data relevant to the content of the module

Brief description

All biological organisms are composed of cells, and these cells are in turn composed of biological molecules. These building blocks that make up all biological organisms will be introduced and explored to provide foundation year students with skills, confidence and knowledge for further study in the biosciences.

Aims

To prepare students for further study in the Life Sciences.

Content

The module will include consideration of the similarities and differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, before comparing the structure of plant, animal and fungal cells. Chemical concepts will be taught to enable nucleic acids, proteins, carbohydrates and lipids to be introduced. The structure, function and synthesis of these biomolecules will be explored. Through the coursework, students will be enabled to apply their learning to organisms of most interest to them.

Module Skills

Skills Type Skills details
Co-ordinating with others Students will work in pairs/small groups during lecture activities and in practical sessions.
Digital capability Students will access the web for information sources and use websites provided in the directed learning materials to practice skills acquired. Coursework will involve computer use.
Real world sense Students will apply their learning to topics that are of interest to them.
Subject Specific Skills Biological and chemical concepts and terminology will be introduced and developed.
