Brief description

Biological organisms do not always function optimally. This can be due to a variety of factors including infectious disease, ageing or environment. These concepts will be
introduced and explored to provide foundation year students with skills, confidence and knowledge for further study in the biosciences.

Aims

To prepare students for further study in the biosciences.
To develop skills for independent study and group work.

Content

This module will introduce the biology of viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites. Microorganisms that are beneficial to health as well as pathogens that cause disease will be included. Infectious and non-infectious diseases affecting humans and other animals will be discussed. Students will work in groups to produce a science communication project relevant to the module.
