Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

  1. Study the relationship between sport and exercise activities and interventions in a range of groups in various settings
  2. Demonstrate the practical skills and techniques required to monitor and evaluate participants using physiological analyses
  3. Demonstrate an awareness of health and safety, risk assessment and ethical considerations
  4. Work cooperatively with a team
  5. Communicate information, ideas, problems and solutions in written format to specialist audiences

Brief description

This module will teach you to apply scientific approaches to evaluate and monitor people. Regardless of the ‘person’, anyone who is focusing on human health and sport performance will need to be aware of the different types of research that are done to collect data, compare people and detect changes. This data is crucial in understanding what is happening to a person. Therefore, this module will combine the research process with the assessment and monitoring of different people. This could be athletes, specific populations (school children, parents, obesity) or clinical conditions (stroke, Parkinson's, kidney disease). To be able to quantify their current level, you need to be aware of what data to collect, and how to do that reliably and accurately. You need to be able to interpret that data and evaluate it with existing research methods. That is what this module will do; you will be collecting data, and evaluating research designs.

Aims

To empower students to design and apply research methods that assess and monitor health, fitness, and performance across diverse populations. To build practical and analytical skills essential for careers in sport science, health assessment, and performance analysis.

Content

Indicative content will include:
•Generating a performance model
•Principles of training
•Understanding the research process: theories, concepts and variables
•Endurance training, strength and conditioning, skills learning, psychological development
•Data visualization and interpretation
•Descriptive and inferential statistics
