On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Provide a critical appreciation of the relationship between sport and exercise activities and interventions in a range of groups in various settings

Demonstrate the interaction between psychology and biological processes.

Demonstrate advanced level knowledge and understanding of theories and principles that underpin the study of physical activity

Communicate information, ideas, problems and solutions relating to qualitative data for academic audiences

Brief description

Introduces key psychological theories and concepts (e.g., motivation, arousal, self-efficacy) relevant to sport and exercise settings. Supports understanding of how psychological factors influence performance, participation, and well-being. Encourages students to make connections between psychology and other core disciplines such as physiology, biomechanics, and coaching. Fosters empathy and interpersonal awareness, vital for coaching, leadership, and applied practice.

Aims

To showcase how psychological factors influence sport performance, physical activity and health, and how exercise can improve mental well-being. To equip students with the knowledge and practical skills to apply psychological theories in promoting active lifestyles and optimising sport performance—valuable for careers in sport psychology, health promotion, and exercise consultancy.
