Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Describe the principles of fitness testing and athlete assessment.

Demonstrate practical skills in administering a range of physical and physiological tests.

Evaluate the reliability and validity of common assessment protocols.

Analyse and interpret test data to inform athlete profiling and training recommendations.

Communicate assessment findings effectively in written and verbal formats.

Brief description

This module introduces students to the concepts of athlete assessment, combining theoretical foundations with practical experience. Students will learn how to select, administer, and interpret a variety of fitness and performance tests, including measures of cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, speed, agility, flexibility, and body composition. Emphasis is placed on understanding the validity, reliability, and ethical considerations of assessment protocols, alongside the use of normative data for athlete profiling. Through hands-on laboratory sessions, students will develop the skills to collect, analyse, and report performance data effectively. By the end of the module, students will be able to apply assessment techniques to inform training recommendations and communicate findings, preparing them for future roles in sport science, coaching, and health-related professions.

Aims

To develop the practical assessment skills needed to test athletes in the applied setting. The module will build competence in selecting, administering, and interpreting a range of fitness and performance tests, whilst encourage critical thinking about the validity, reliability, and appropriateness of different assessment tools.
