Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Understand and recognise the need for conservation across various scales, genetic, species and habitats.

Understand the complex nature of conservation practices.

Synthesise theoretical knowledge and apply this to the development of an Ecological Management Plan.

Brief description

Via interaction with relevant stakeholders and conservation practitioners, this applied module will allow students the opportunity to evaluate real-world conservation approaches, as well as produce an ecological management report under a stakeholder's guidance. The first half of the module will explore the field of conservation biology, across the various scales that conservation is considered, namely from genetic diversity to biomes and ecosystems, including the practical approaches of conserving species, habitats and ecosystems. The second part of the module focuses on a selected real-world environmental management Case Study which is carried out in conjunction with a relevant stakeholder.

Aims

To enhance students employability by providing training in key topics valued in the environment sector and by developing their presentational and report writing skills.

Content

This module consists of two elements.

Firstly, a series of seminars will be given covering conservation biology, including the practices applied to a range of real-world scenarios. This will include talks by conservation practitioners and a site visit.

Secondly, group case study exercises will be undertaken where students will address specific environmental management problems. Introductory sessions will outline the purpose and delivery of this element of the module, emphasising good group working practices (e.g. allocation of specified roles, minuting of case study meetings). The students will then engage with individual members of staff acting as the client for each case study. The staff member will arrange a site visit to meet up with a real world stakeholder. Students will be guided in the delivery of group presentations and reports.
