Brief description
This module provides an introduction to using spreadsheets to process, preserve, analyse and visualise data. It also uses macro scripting to solve problems.
Aims
The module aims to increase students’ speed and fluency at using the computing equipment at Aberystwyth, with an emphasis on skills necessary for their future course.
Content
This module is taught through 1 hour of lecture and 2 hours in a computer lab each week.
Week 1: Introduction; spreadsheet basics including calculations and sorting data
Weeks 2 – 3 : Importing data; applying text functions
Weeks 4 – 7: Data validation, data integrity, name manager, conditional formatting., LOOKUP functions, visualising data in charts
Week 8: The strengths and dangers of macros; first steps in macro programming
Week 9: Identifiers, assignments; conditionals, loops & animations
Week 10: More complex animation
Week 11: Debugging code; code quality & commenting
