Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
- Use HTML5 and CSS to build a website
- Build presentation slides using presentation software
- Build a small multi-table database
- Use word-processing software to produce a professional document
Brief description
This module continues the gentle introduction to the areas of computing that are usually considered 'Information Technology', such as producing word-processed documents, presentations, building simple web pages and simple multi-table databases.
Aims
The module aims to increase students’ speed and fluency at using the computing equipment at Aberystwyth, with an emphasis on skills necessary for their future course.
Content
This module is taught through 1 hour of lecture and 2 x 2 hours in a computer lab each week.
Week 1: Introduction; backing up data, connecting to the network, plagiarism
Weeks 2 – 4 : Online presence; using HTML5 & CSS
Weeks 5: Using presentation software
Week 6: Databases – data classification, basic tables, field properties
Week 7: ER design - Entity Relationship modelling
Week 8: ER design – developing a set of plans
Week 9: Databases – referential integrity
Week 10: Databases – writing queries
Week 11: Word processing software
