Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Select and apply the appropriate methods and tools to enable the creation, control and use of records in organisational contexts.

2. Design appropriate strategies for the acquisition and development of archival collections.

3. Demonstrate an understanding of arrangement and description of archival collections for their management and accessibility.

4. Interpret appropriate legislation, standards, and best practice in order to specify requirements for the design of a recordkeeping system.

5. Identify, synthesize, and evaluate a range of relevant academic and professional literature and case studies to support argument.

Brief description

This module provides students with the necessary knowledge and skills to design and implement recordkeeping policies, strategies, and systems regardless of format and age. We will examine the importance and management of records in a modern organizational context and the processes and standards used to create, capture, and maintain intellectual control of records across the continuum.

Content

Records and Information Governance
Exploring the standards, processes, and tools that underpin the creation, control and use of records in organizational contexts. We will examine the benefits of records management programmes and their role in wider business continuity, compliance, and risk management strategies.

Archival development and description
Examining standards, strategies, and processes for the acquisition, arrangement, and description of archives to facilitate user access, including, content standards, authority control, and network interoperability.

Record keeping Systems
Exploring the functional requirements for recordkeeping systems for both records and archives. We will discuss the main options for such systems, the strengths and weaknesses of some of the existing providers, and the process of procurement.
