Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Analyse how filmmakers communicate and innovate through film craft
Showcase increased technical skill in one area of film craft through practical application
Synthesise creative technique with critical understanding to demonstrate innovative communication through film craft

Brief description

This module facilitates students to increase their knowledge of the creative and technical underpinnings of distinct specialisms of film craft. They will learn about the breaking down of filmmaking into distinct professional roles; how those roles each contribute to the creative storytelling process and how they collaborate and inform each other’s choices.
Working both collaboratively and individually students will learn group working skills as well as developing their own unique creative voice. Creative problems will be explored through the application of technical skill.

Content

Through a mix of lectures and practical workshops, the module will provide grounding in the following distinct specialisms of film craft:
• Cinematography
• Production Design
• Sound Recording and Design
• Editing and Post-Production

Improving own Learning and Performance	Via independent work students will learn how to make use of the available means, how to overcome obstacles, as well as how to cope with (constructive) criticism.
Information Technology	Students will be making film work using digital media technologies competently and appropriately.
Personal Development and Career planning	Students will be using the Portfolio as an effective working tool for academic and career development and reflection. Students will evaluate and analyse their own work and that of their peers with reflexivity and consideration.
Problem solving	Students will be challenged with both practical and theoretical problems and then engaging in individual and group activities to solve these problems.
Research skills	Students will think analytically, researching in both practical and intellectual contexts, developing distinctive skills as a practitioner-theorist.
