Demonstrate wider understanding of the literature on the application of remote sensing technologies to environmental problems.
This module will introduce students to remote sensing data acquired by a range of airborne and satellite sensors. The module is split into two parts, the first introduces the background theory on which the subject is built and the second focuses on applications of remotely sensed data across a broad range of environmental disciplines. Following the completion of this module, students should be able to undertake basic analysis of remotely sensed data and be in a position to be an intelligent customer for acquiring expert services in remote sensing for future employers.
The first 5 lectures are focused on the background theory and fundamentals of remote sensing, which need to be understood to appropriately discuss the application of this data to real world scenarios. The following 4 lectures are focused on particular application themes, which include terrestrial vegetation, glaciology, hydrology and employability within the field. The final lecture slot is given over to revision ahead of the exam.
Computer based practicals will also be undertaken to provide students with skills in basic remote sensing data analysis, primarily image classification. To aid the interpretation of the images field visits to the Aberystwyth area (usually walking from campus) will also be undertaken.
