Italian Language (Advanced)

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Differentiate between major stylistic levels of Italian. Recognise, understand and apply differentlinguistic registers and apply the appropriate conventions, showing conscious contextualawareness.
2. Produce clear, detailed, well-structured compositions / expositions on complexsubjects, highlighting salient issues, synthesising and evaluating information and arguments fromvaried sources, expanding and supporting points of view at some length with well-reasonedsubsidiary points and relevant examples. Use speculation and hypothesis in presenting a complexsubject, comparing and evaluating alternative proposals and arguments.
3. Communicate withconfidence on complex subjects in an assured, personal and natural style, appropriate to thecontext, incorporating allusive language, idiom and humour, where appropriate.
4. Argue a formalposition convincingly, answering complex lines of counter-argument fluently, spontaneously andappropriately. Exploit vocabulary options creatively so as to effectively use circumlocution in mostsituations. Can restate and challenge contributions from interlocutors, backtrack and reformulatewithout interrupting natural linguistic flow.
5. Handle complex formal and informal socialinteractions and communicative mediation with confidence, demonstrating contextualawareness.
6. Present independently prepared material in spoken or written Italian, using complexlexical and morphological structures, demonstrating well-supported personal interpretation andcritical evaluation.
7. Translate complex and abstract texts into and out of Italian, conveyingevaluative aspects and arguments, capturing most nuances and showing idiomatic, authenticstyle and grammatical usage, with little awkwardness or source language/cultureinterference.
8. Summarise complex pieces of written or spoken Italian, clearly relaying the mainpoints and synthesizing opinions, arguments and discussions. Exploit information / arguments todiscuss a topic, elaborating on, evaluating and adding own opinions, including conveying subtledistinctions in the presentation of facts / arguments.
9. Employ the structure and conventions of avariety of genres, varying the tone, style and register according to context, addressee, text typeand theme
10. Express complex, detailed and multifaceted insights into Italian-speaking cultural, social andpolitical affairs.
11. Demonstrate proficiency in Italian grammar and syntax, appropriate to level C1 of the CEFR.

An advanced level course in Italian language and culture. It will cover material from level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Successful students will achieve Common Reference Level C1/C2 (Proficient User) by the end of the module.

The aim of this module is to equip final-year students with advanced language skills of a professional standard. Students will also refine their cultural knowledge. At the end of this module successful students will be proficient users of Italian, able to use the language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes.

Students will cover material appropriate to level C1 of the CEFR, consolidating their linguistic and stylistic competence in Italian, preparing them as future language professionals. Students will engage in the integrated study of the Italian language in its cultural contexts. They will further refine their language skills in a variety of formats including academic and other forms of writing, complex issues pertaining to translation, and high-level competency in spoken Spanish, across a range of formal and informal registers.
