Module Skills

Skills Type Skills details
Adaptability and resilience Successful completion of the module is related to a high level of engagement with the theories and approaches in couples counselling, and an openness to personal critical reflection and self-awareness. Ongoing group and personal development work, in particular, will encourage a critical mind that – with self-awareness – will facilitate a continual cycle of learning. Over the course of the module, students can identify any barriers in reflection and development, building on the feedback
Co-ordinating with others Students will have developed advanced team and group work skills in previous years, and will continue to develop these skills by undertaking a range of group-based activities and reflecting critically on the nature of group dynamics, performance and their own role within the group structure. Also, through the group presentation assignment, students will play an important role in developing a group identity and helping to create a supporting learning environment for their peers.
Creative Problem Solving Each seminar will enable learners to apply theoretical material from the lectures to be developed and applied critically to issues relating to relationships and couples counselling. This ability will be formally assessed via the portfolio and group presentation component.
Critical and analytical thinking Students will have developed advanced skills in previous years to identify and access supporting literature to extend material introduced in lectures, and their own literature review, to facilitate the completion of coursework elements. These skills will be assessed in the portfolio assessment
Digital capability Successful completion of the module relies on full engagement with bibliographic resources. Students will also use ICT skills in completing their portfolio and reflection assessments, and PowerPoint presentation.
Professional communication An evaluation of patterns of couple interaction and counselling approaches will lead to further development of professional communication skills via lectures and during seminars, and assessed via group presentation and portfolio. Students will reflect critically on their development in this domain during the reflective element of their portfolio.
Real world sense Personal development and career planning: This module builds on personal development, reflection and self-awareness that are primarily facilitated through reflection, group activities and seminar discussions. The applied nature of this module will enhance students’ understanding of adult romantic relationships and patterns of communication that are transferable to other relationships and contexts. Understanding of the work of couples therapists could inform them about future career paths.
Subject Specific Skills Students will have the opportunity to continue developing a wide range of academic and communication skills, which help them to understand, conceptualise and evaluate the theory and practice of counselling. These include advanced communication skills and critical interpersonal skills and self-awareness.
