Getting ready for university with us at Aber

In this week’s AberAnticipation blog, third year student Lilia Mo discusses some tips on getting ready for university with us at Aber:

Congratulations and croeso i Aberystwyth! In order to prepare for your arrival, there are certain tasks you will need to complete. These include applying for accommodation, activating your IT account, applying for your Aber Card, arranging your Student Finance, and a lot more! A detailed list of all the tasks you’ll need to complete can be found at the AberAnticipation  : Welcome , Aberystwyth University webpage.

If you’re an International Student, there are a few more things you need to do, including visa applications. More information on this can be found at the Visas & Immigration  : Student Services , Aberystwyth University webpage. It may be a good idea to consider if you need any English language support. If you feel like you would benefit from this, you can access support through the International English Centre  : Aberystwyth University webpage.

If you require any disability or learning support, make sure you reach out to the Accessibility team before you arrive. You can use the Accessibility and Inclusion Team  : Student Services , Aberystwyth University webpage for more information, or email accessibility@aber.ac.uk to do this.

Please check your emails so that you don’t miss anything important. You’ll need both your personal email address and your new student account so that you can stay up to date with important information. Make use of the Student Hub - Home and Online Student Induction and Consent Training: Welcome , Aberystwyth University to get to know the services and information available to you.

Also make sure that your vaccinations/immunisations are up to date. It’s also a good idea if you’re an International Student to consult with your home doctor about which vaccinations are recommended for living in the UK. It is also very important to register with a local GP in Aberystwyth. More information about this can be found on the Student Health  : Student Services , Aberystwyth University webpage.

During pre-registration, you can select your module choices. If you want to learn more about each module, the Modules: Aberystwyth University webpage has a helpful search function where you can look up the module name or code, and find out information about the content, assessments, and more for each module.

Once you’ve done everything above, you can start packing! Remember that your university accommodation can only fit so much, so pack wisely. It’s also a good idea to check which appliances and equipment are included in your room or flat so that you don’t bring any duplicate items.

For international students, important documents and prescriptions as well as other items can be found on this handy AberAnticipation: Welcome , Aberystwyth University checklist under the ‘Start packing’ section.

Don’t forget to plan your route in good time! The Travelling to Aberystwyth: Discover Aberystwyth , Aberystwyth University webpage also offers some more detailed insights.

Preparing to move to university is a big step in life. The webpages and services in this blog are here to help you with the process. Remember that it’s normal to feel overwhelmed or anxious, but everyone is in the same boat as you!

My top tip for pre-arrival is to reach out to your new flatmates and get to know each other before your arrival to Aber. There are also dedicated social media groups (e.g. Facebook) for new students at Aberystwyth University which you can join to make friends.

As a new student, there’s a lot of useful information available to you to help you settle into life at university. The Welcome: Aberystwyth University webpages will have information about AberWelcome 2025, which will host lots of fun activities to help you to get to know the university and meet new people. Be sure to put yourself out there and make some friends when the time comes!

I hope that this blog has helped you, and please don’t forget to be excited too!
