Final preparations for arriving at Aber!

In her final blog, third year student Lilia Mo discusses some final preparations for your time with us here at Aber!

Congratulations! You’ve worked hard to make it this far, and now it’s finally time for you to pack your things and head to Aberystwyth.

Deciding what to bring and how to get here can be a bit daunting possibly, so the university has put together this webpage (AberArrival  : Welcome , Aberystwyth University) with a helpful checklist of tasks to complete to ensure your arrival is hassle free.

Once you’ve checked into your new room, I’d recommend checking out the many events and sessions held on campus during Welcome Week. You’ll receive a foldable guide to Welcome Week when you arrive which is really handy listing all the events taking place. Using this might be a good way to get to know your new flatmates and get to know each other some more. Make sure that you get familiar with the Welcome and Induction Events Planner which is personalised to you to stay up to date about what events are on, and when.

If I was to choose three things that you must not miss, then firstly it’s the Freshers Fair! Lots of local businesses and organisations as well as student societies and clubs will be there and there’s something for everyone. And even if you’re not interested in joining a society, you can find lots of free things like pens and sweets at the stalls.

It’s also important to meet your department in the first week so you get to know your course, tutors and other students on your course before work begins! Your department will be arranging quite a few essential activities that you will need to attend and they should appear in your calendars so don’t miss them!

I’d also recommend getting to know campus in your free time during Welcome Week. There’s a really fun way to do so this year by doing ‘AberWelcome : The Campus Quest’. It’s a digital campus tour where you can do it with others and just a really good way to find important locations and get to know the campus a bit better. All you need to do is download the Actionbound app for iOS -Link or Android - Link and then search for ‘AberWelcome : The Campus Quest’!

If you need any help or support during Aber’s main arrivals weekend, you can head down to the Welcome Zone at the Hugh Owen Library between 9am and 5.30pm on Thursday 18 September – Saturday 20 September 2025, where you’ll find friendly staff and students looking to help you with any issues you may encounter. You should then definitely go to the AberWelcome Sunday Sessions that take place on Sunday 21 September 2025 at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre. These sessions are led by students and provide you with information to make the most of your time at university. They’ll share what they wish they would have known when they started, but also allow you to ask those important questions that matter to you too. It’s a must to attend!

Overall, I hope you’re excited to get stuck into life at university! Remember that it’s okay and normal to feel slightly apprehensive or nervous about such a big change, but everyone is in the same boat as you. Make sure to take up opportunities to make friends with flatmates and other Freshers, and soon you’ll feel right at home in Aber I’m sure.
