Staying Calm During Clearing

At Aberystwyth University, your wellbeing is always a priority, and we know that results day and Clearing can sometimes feel stressful. Whether things haven’t gone to plan, your interests have changed, or you’ve only just decided that university is the right next step, we’re here to support you.

Remember, Clearing is your opportunity to find a course that suits you in a university you’ll love.

Here are five top tips to help you feel calm, confident, and ready to make the most of Clearing.

  1. Prepare as much as you can - A little planning can go a long way. By thinking through a few possible outcomes before results day, you’ll feel calmer and better equipped to make decisions if plans change. Spend some time exploring courses and universities that interest you, even ones you might not have considered before. Think about what matters most to you now, whether that’s subject choice, location, or cost of living. Make a shortlist of your favourites, write down contact details, and prepare a few questions in advance.

  2. Keep a positive mindset - Try not to be disheartened if things haven’t gone to plan. Clearing is an opportunity to rethink your options and find a course that excites you. Remember, you’re not alone, there are thousands of students like you that secure university places through Clearing each year.

  3. Stay open minded - Clearing is the ideal time to explore new subjects and universities you might not have considered before. Even if you previously thought you were 100% certain about what you wanted to study,  this may be your opportunity to explore other options. There might be a course you hadn’t considered before that turns out to be the perfect fit.

  4. Talk it through - Big decisions feel easier when you’ve got support. Talking to family, friends, teachers, or advisers can help you feel clearer and more confident in your decisions. Sometimes just saying things out loud helps you see what’s right for you. You don’t have to figure it all out alone.

  5. Take it step by step - It might seem like everything needs to be done now, but it’s important you don’t feel rushed. When you’re ready, get in touch with the universities you’re interested in.
