What do you remember most about your time at Aber?

My entire experience at Aberystwyth University was fantastic. My time in Computer Science and Software Engineering degree has taught me many of the technical and practical skills I use in my job today. You couldn’t wish for a better university and adult education.

What are you doing now career-wise and how has your Aberystwyth Degree helped?

My time studying at Aberystwyth University taught me a lot and provided me with the tools to go on to set up my own business. Without my degree in Software Engineering, I definitely wouldn’t have the credentials to head up Opace or the knowledge required to succeed in the competitive digital marketing sector. Studying in the Computer Science department provided lots of opportunities to get involved with practical and group based exercises, something which is absolutely essential when you graduate and work in a team based environment.

What advice would you have for a student doing your course now?

I’d stress the importance of attending and participating in group based activities – you’ll find that they’re far more educational and enjoyable when you speak up and share your thoughts and ideas.

I also found much value in participating in work experience outside of University or as part of an Industrial Placement scheme. Summer is a great time to wind down before you begin the next educational year, it’s also the perfect time for putting some of the things you’ve learned to good use. You’ll find many companies are willing to take on University students for work experience and you never know, they may even find you a role within their Company once you’ve graduated, which was what happened for me.

My final piece of advice is to be confident, challenge yourself and don’t be afraid to take a risk – there will never be a better time to do it!
