Dr Diana Valencia-Duarte

Dr Diana Valencia-Duarte BEng, MSc, PhD, is a lecturer in the History of the Global South.

Her teaching focuses on Latin America and the Caribbean, environmental, cultural, and political history, and histories of collective resistance, social movements, and revolution, particularly among Indigenous, Black, and peasant communities.

She completed her PhD at the University of Exeter with the thesis ‘The Peasant Food Question: Agrarian Reforms, Depeasantisation and Food Sovereignty in Dispute, Colombia, 1961-2013’. Prior to joining Aberystwyth, she was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Bristol, where she worked on the MEMPAZ project, ‘Bringing Memories in from the Margins: Inclusive Transitional Justice and Creative Memory Processes for Reconciliation in Colombia’.

Her research focuses on Latin American and Caribbean peasant communities and is situated at the intersection of environmental history, historical memory, participatory research, research through creation, and Critical Agrarian Studies. Current projects involve communities in Colombia and the Brazilian Amazon, as well as migrant communities in Wales.
