Graduate of the Natural Sciences Tripos of Cambridge University and member of Clare College. Doctoral research at the John Innes Centre in Norwich. Postdoctoral periods at the University of California, Davis and the State University of New York in Syracuse, as well as the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. Appointed to academic staff of Aberystwyth University in 1983. Over 80 scientific articles published. Fellow of Higher Education Academy.

Research
In recent years I have been primarily engaged in metabolomics and development of chemometric methods to extract information from analytical data on animal, plant and food materials. This research has been funded by industrial partners and by the BBSRC.
