Education and Student Experience Award

The Education and Student Experience Award (ESEA) is a new fund which has been established to provide support for innovative studies and projects to improve education and the student experience at Aberystwyth University. ESEA is linked to the Annual Learning and Teaching Conference, and colleagues are encouraged to tie their project to the themes of that year's conference. The fund consists of £10K that colleagues can bid for. This fund is made up of £5K from the Vice Chancellor’s Office and £5K from Medr.

Proposals need to ensure that they consider the core values of the ESEA:

  • Students-as-partners
  • Accessible to all
  • Welsh language
  • Scalability to be adopted by other colleagues and areas across the University

This year's fund is intended to support projects and interventions that are based on ideas discussed at the conference across the following themes:

  • Health and wellbeing / mental health in a learning and teaching context
  • Accessibility and inclusion (inclusive learning and teaching design)
  • Compassionate engagement and assessment

The deadline for applications to this round of awards is: 12:00pm Friday 10 October 2025

We’ve compiled some Frequently Asked Questions below in the Guidance for Applicants tab but if you need any further information, please contact the fund administrators on elearning@aber.ac.uk.

  • Ethical review is not required
  • Ethical review is required and I have completed the online ethics form.

If you are unsure whether your project falls within the definition of research, please see the guidance on the ethics webpage or contact ethics@aber.ac.uk for further advice and guidance. If your project requires an ethical review you will need to submit a research ethics application form.

Is there anything that I should avoid in the project?

The aim of these projects is that they are task and finish in the financial year. The project should have some clear and tangible outputs. As such, the money should not be used for business-as-usual activities.

If you are purchasing equipment or software as part of the project, consider who has access to the equipment and software, who maintains and supports it, and what your plans are for it once the project has come to an end. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to contact us on elearning@aber.ac.uk
