The Department of Life Sciences (DLS) at Aberystwyth University is proud to celebrate the success of Esme Logan, a recent graduate of the BSc Veterinary Biosciences programme, who has been awarded the prestigious British Society of Animal Science (BSAS) Undergraduate Thesis of the Year Award.

Esme’s dissertation tackled a major global challenge in livestock health: the control of the liver fluke parasite, a widespread and economically damaging issue for farmers worldwide. Her research successfully identified and characterised a novel protein target, offering promising potential for future control methods.

“Esme produced a thesis of outstanding quality on a novel protein target that could be used for the control of a globally important parasite of livestock, the liver fluke,” said Dr Russ Morphew, Esme’s dissertation supervisor. “Her dedication to the project was exceptional and it is truly fitting that she has been recognised by the BSAS. I'm super proud!”

Reflecting on her time at Aberystwyth, Esme shared:

“I feel fortunate to have carried out this project. My time at Aberystwyth University has been a truly special and formative chapter. I have had exceptional support from my tutor, Russ Morphew, and department staff throughout. Beyond the research, I've developed countless skills, made friendships for a lifetime, and created memories I will always cherish.”

Esme’s achievement continues a strong tradition of student excellence within the department. Dr Debbie Nash, coordinator of the Vet Biosciences scheme, commented:

“We are delighted that Esme, a BSc Veterinary Biosciences recent graduate, has been awarded such a prestigious accolade, continuing our superb reputation for DLS student success at national level undergraduate competitions.”

Looking ahead, Esme is preparing to begin her next chapter studying Veterinary Science at the University of Liverpool this September. She hopes to continue exploring research opportunities in parasitology throughout her degree and future career.

“I'm excited to take these experiences and skills with me,” Esme added, “and I hope to find more opportunities to continue my research in this area.”

Esme’s award is a testament not only to her talent and hard work, but also to the supportive and research-rich environment at Aberystwyth University. We wish her every success in her future studies and career.
