Katy Lake: Coaching Confidence and Animal Science

Since 2023, I’ve been a coach with the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA), and it’s honestly one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. Being an RDA coach is about so much more than teaching people how to ride, it’s about creating opportunities for everyone to experience the joy, independence, and freedom that horses can bring.

Through riding, I help participants find a space that feels safe, happy, and completely their own. Many disabled people face barriers that limit their independence, but when they’re on a horse, those barriers can melt away. Seeing riders smile, grow in confidence, and achieve things they never thought possible is the most amazing sight.

As part of my role, I teach lessons and train volunteers, helping them develop the confidence and skills to support riders during sessions. No two days are ever the same; one moment I might be helping a nervous new rider find their balance, and the next I’m supporting a rider preparing for competition. This year, I took four riders to the RDA National Championships at Hartpury College, and one of them won their class! It was such a proud and emotional moment for all of us.

In July 2025, I was incredibly honoured to receive the RDA Young Coach of the Year Award, chosen from nominees across more than 400 RDA groups nationwide. It’s still surreal to think about, but it means so much to be recognised for something I love doing so much.

Alongside my RDA work, I’m studying Animal Science at Aberystwyth University, where my interests lie in equine nutrition and locomotion. I love that I get to combine my academic studies with my passion for horses. Life in Aber is amazing - I enjoy walking the coastal paths, heading to Borth Beach (sunshine or storms, I don’t mind!), or relaxing with friends at the pub after a long day.
