Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
- Describe key aspects of animal immunology, bacteriology, virology and parasitology, both at the molecular and applied level.
- Evaluate data on the etiology, pathogenesis, treatment and prevention of infectious and immunological diseases in animals.
- Explain and discuss means of disease diagnosis and control, with particular reference to current research.
- Evaluate immune system components linked to infection under examination conditions.
Brief description
A series of approximately 20 lectures (3-6 Immunology, 3-6 Bacteriology, 3-6 Virology, and 3-6 Parasitology) supported with 5 seminars and 2 practical sessions.
The aims of the module are:
To investigate in detail animal immunology, bacteriology, virology and parasitology both at the molecular and applied level.
To apply this knowledge to animal disease, and so understand disease etiology, pathogenesis, treatment
and prevention.
To understand the principles of disease diagnosis and control.
Content
This module will considering the following areas:
Key components of the immune system.
Immunological aspects of infection.
Principles, merits and limitations of vaccinations.
Principles of integrated programmes for the control of parasites.
Principles governing the selection of appropriate anthelmintics.
Approaches used for the isolation and identification of bacterial and viral pathogens.
Means by which bacteria and viruses are able to cause disease.
Procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of bacterial and viral infections.
