Profile

Ellie Jolley-Dawson is an Adult Field Nursing Lecturer who contributes to all programmes of study within the Department of Healthcare Education at Aberystwyth University. Originally from Powys, Ellie moved to Edinburgh to study nursing, gaining a Bachelor of Nursing with Honours from The University of Edinburgh.

Ellie began her career in the district nursing service in Edinburgh, providing 24/7 care to a large caseload of patients. It was during this time that her passion for palliative and end-of-life care developed.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Ellie returned to Wales and has since worked across Hywel Dda, Powys Teaching Health Board, and the independent sector. Her diverse clinical background gives her unique insight into the patient journey - from adolescence through to end-of-life care. She is experienced in a wide range of clinical skills and enjoys both acute and community settings.

In her current role, Ellie leads several key areas within the department. As Palliative Care Lead, she promotes the integration of essential palliative care themes into the curriculum, ensuring nursing graduates are equipped to deliver compassionate, holistic care. She also heads the Healthcare Education Network Aberystwyth (HENA), which embeds service user voices throughout the programme — from lectures and interviews to clinical skills and content development. Most recently, Ellie has taken on the role of International Lead, overseeing international applications, supporting visa compliance, and providing pastoral care to ensure the wellbeing and success of our international student cohort.

Transitioning directly from clinical practice into education, Ellie is passionate about inspiring the future NHS Wales workforce and nurturing the next generation of nurse leaders. Having sat on national and government boards as a student nurse herself, she actively encourages students to explore the many opportunities available to them during their time at Aberystwyth University.

Research

Ellie is currently involved in researching the impact of communication styles on the dying and bereaved, and hopes to publish this work in coming months.

Ellie is also actively engaged on research surrounding the inclusion, or lack of, darker skin tones in clinical skills and nursing education across the UK.

Ellie welcomes interest in collaboration on  research.
