IPRG hosts 2nd 'Davies Forum' with Profs. Ken Booth and Richard Jackson and Dr Jeff Bridoux

The speakers addressed the topic: 'Red or White? Why I Wear a Remembrance Poppy'. The format was short presentations followed by lots of Q&A. The 2nd Davies Forum took place on 11 November in the Main Hall of the International Politics Building.

 

E. H. Carr Memorial Lecture - Professor Robert Keohane

The DDMI is pleased to note that Professor Robert Keohane of the Woodrow Wilson School, Princeton University, visited the Department of International Politics and Aberystwyth University to give the E.H. Carr Memorial Lecture. This very special event took place in the Old Hall Lecture Theatre in the Old College, Aberystwyth University, on 27 October.

The IPRG was very proud to host a special seminar given by Professor Robert Keohane of the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University. The informal seminar touching on the IR discipline as a vocation and other topics took place in the Main Hall of the International Politics Building on 27 October 2011.

Dr Vera Vesela (née Exnerova), Research Fellow at Prague Institute of International Relations, visited the Department to speak on "Not Our Enemy? Rethinking the Islamist Challenge". Her lecture took place in the Main Hall of the International Politics Building on 25 October.

Grant Dawon IPRG-IHRG talk: "'Who wants a mission?' Canadian Forces’ Resistance to Peacekeeping in Namibia, 1978"

Dr Grant Dawson, Department of International Politics, argued for a re-examination of Canadian peacekeeping. Past research suggests that Canada contributed to every UN mission until the end of the Cold War because of domestic political, nationalist, and Cold War strategic considerations, but his paper on Namibia in 1978 points to strong resistance when these factors were present. This talk took place in the Main Hall of the International Politics Building on 10 October.

 

Jess Gifkins talk - "'Timely & Decisive Responses'? Pillar three of R2P in the cases of Darfur and Libya"

The DDMI was proud to host a talk by Jess Gifkins, a PhD candidate with the University of Queensland. Her paper explored the role of the Security Council in implementing the ‘responsibility to protect’ with a particular focus on the cases of Darfur and Libya. The talk took place in the Steve Crichter Room of the International Politics Building on 14 September.

Justin Morris - 'Hierarchy in Responsibility: Great Power Responsibility at the Dawn of the UN Era' - with photos

 Justin Morris' paper combined a theoretical examination of the relationship between anarchy and hierarchy with a historical analysis of the policies of the United States, Great Britain and Soviet Union as they planned the 1945 post-War peace. This seminar took place on 16 June, in the Steve Crichter Room, International Politics Building, Aberystwyth University.

Professor Wheeler's lectures on conflict transformation have been published by an Indian NGO Women in Security Conflict Management and Peace (WISCOMP). His project on the Challenges to Trust-Building in Nuclear Worlds inspires another article on Indo-Pakistani relations.

Sir Michael Aaronson: 'Children, the State and International Intervention: An INGO Perspective'

Sir Michael Aaronson gave a talk about his experience of international intervention in Northern Iraq, Somalia, Rwanda, Kosovo, Afghanistan, and etc. as a senior practitioner with Save the Children. He also discussed the conclusions he has drawn about the limitations of most current modes of intervention. The lecture took place in the Steve Critcher Room in the Department of International Politics on Wednesday 19 January.
