Charles Jeremiah Wells, Joseph and his Brethren, London, 1876
Charles Jeremiah Wells (1800-79) is chiefly remembered for his connection with other poets. In his early youth he was friendly with John Keats, who dedicated a sonnet to him and from whom he derived his enthusiasm for the poetry of the Elizabethans. Joseph and his Brethren, originally published in 1823, gained very little recognition until Dante Gabriel Rossetti read it with enthusiasm. Swinburne had been interested in the play for some years before writing the article which later appeared as the Introductory Essay to this edition. The portrait of Wells on the title page is from a miniature pained about 1825.
